By 1950, cork production was almost entirely concentrated in Portugal and Spain, where a wide variety of cork products were produced. mantoncork became a partner in a major factory in Portugal that specialized in fishing rod handles, custom industrial and custom consumer cork products. Ethical beauty brand Lush has received its first carbon neutral certification for its eco-friendly cork jug.
The packaging, which debuted in 2017, is designed to hold its shampoo bars.
It’s made from oak bark from southern Portugal and was originally launched as a charitable cause to support the regeneration of the country’s wider cork oak forests.
According to Lush, the certification verifies that each 35 gram cork jug can sequester more than 33 times its weight in carbon dioxide, removing approximately 1.2 kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere.
John Newton, associate director of the Carbon Trust, added, “The transition to a net-zero economy offers companies the opportunity to develop innovative products that appeal to consumers and differentiate their brands in the marketplace.”
“Lush’s 35g cork tins are an innovative packaging approach to meet these needs and we are delighted to demonstrate that they are achieving carbon neutrality.”

7. Eco-friendly concept - Mazda MX-30

Mazda MX-30
Location: Japan
Type of company: Brand, Manufacturing

MX-30-11

Mazda’s new 100% electric car, the MX-30, could have used some luxurious new leather, or perhaps some fancy wood, but it chose cork for a reason, and a very good one: cork is its heritage.
What many people don’t know is that Mazda’s predecessor, the Toyo cork industry, was used as an alternative material for gaskets and walls before plastic and rubber technology was as developed as it is today. But after World War II, industrial-scale rubber and plastic production meant that cork gradually took a back seat as a large-scale industrial material,”
“But because it holds such an important place in Mazda’s history, it was the right choice for us to use it for the MX-30 passenger cabin.” said Tomoichi Matsuda, chief designer of the Mazda MX-30.

Mazda’s goal is to contribute to the reduction of its environmental footprint. This goal is insulated from the brand’s other attributes, namely comfort, impermeability, thermal insulation, sound insulation and vibration resistance.
The use of molding technology and the natural properties of cork, such as lightness, flexibility and softness to the touch, combine to give the new Mazda cars a pleasant sense of well-being and comfort in addition to their inherent natural beauty.
Mazda ensured that the solutions implemented in the MX-30 car would increase the frictional resistance. In addition, it naturally prepares the car for the demands of everyday life. Sport driving mode or road conditions, cork will be an excellent choice in terms of application.
